A study coaching session first involves finding the time and peace to take a close look at the young person’s school situation. A confidential discussion and the systemic view of the study coach can often be helpful in gaining a better understanding of the reasons for the discord in learning and at school. Subsequently, it then becomes possible to formulate the personal and achievable targets for the pupil’s own learning
Once the targets have been formulated, a joint discussion and experiment then take place to seek (and find) suitable strategies to actually implement these targets. The process of study coaching is then adapted to the actual situation in an individual and personal manner, taking due account of the individuality of young people.
With a full portfolio of methods in place, work in the following sessions can then focus on all the subject areas that are of importance for the adolescents. These may include approaches as varied as therapeutic interventions to increase motivation, mnemonic techniques, which facilitate the learning of foreign languages or mathematics, or even very specific timetables in preparation for school qualifications, such as the ESA, MSA and Abitur in Germany. In this process, we constantly consider the ways in which the human brain functions and how they can best be exploited for the pupil’s own learning.
A key feature in my study coaching is that I fully engage with my opposite number and take the actual matter of concern as the starting point for the coaching. This focus enables the adolescents to work out tailor-made solutions that actually fit in with their everyday school and family life.
Unlike the situation with private tuition or an integrative learning therapy, study coaching is not designed to provide long-term support in learning. Instead, it is aimed at an effective and compact aid for self-help and is limited in time to between 6 and 12 sessions. The goal of my study coaching is to help the young people as quickly as possible, yet always at their own speed, to utilize their own creative resources in order to optimize their learning process. This leads to a feeling of self-efficacy in learning that is not only important for specific subjects in specific situations at school, but can be extended to all areas of learning, whether during their studies or later in their professional life.
